Riyadh Metro Line Extension

The Riyadh Metro project is a colossal, city-wide public transport initiative by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), designed to transform urban mobility and address the extreme traffic congestion in Saudi Arabia's rapidly growing capital. The term "Riyadh Metro Line Extension" refers to the overall, massive build-out of the system, which included both the initial six lines and planned future extensions.

Project Description

  • Scale and Scope: The project, valued at over $27 billion, is one of the world's largest single-phase metro systems ever built. It is designed to be fully automated and driverless (Grade of Automation Level 4 - GoA4).

  • The Network: The core network consists of six metro lines spanning a total length of approximately 176.5 kilometers.

  • Stations: It includes 85 metro stations, including several iconic, architecturally significant stations (like the KAFD Station, Olaya Station, and Western Station) designed by world-renowned architects.

  • Infrastructure Variety: The lines incorporate a complex mix of civil infrastructure to navigate the dense urban environment:

    • Underground Sections: Bored and cut-and-cover tunnels, especially in the city center.

    • Elevated Sections: Viaducts built above ground.

    • At-Grade Sections: Running at street level.

  • Goal: To provide a modern, efficient, and sustainable public transportation system that connects the city's major centers, including the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), King Khalid International Airport (KKIA), and key universities, aiming to reduce the reliance on private vehicles and support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

  • Extension: The current program includes planned future extensions, such as an extension of Line 2 and the construction of a new Line 7 to further expand the network and connect key new development projects.

Scope of Involvement for JG Building Group

JG Building Group was engaged in the execution of major civil and infrastructure works for the Riyadh Metro Line Extension, a critical component of Saudi Arabia’s urban mobility and public transportation expansion program.

Key Scope Areas:

  • Civil & Structural Works:
Construction of elevated and at-grade metro viaduct sections, station substructures, platforms, and ancillary metro facilities.

  • Track Bed & Alignment Infrastructure:
Execution of ballastless track foundations, plinths, alignment structures, and vibration-control civil elements along the extended corridor.

  • Station Development Works:
Construction of station boxes, concourses, entry-exit structures, pedestrian access bridges, and associated public interface zones.

  • Utility Diversion & Protection:
Relocation, protection, and coordination of existing underground and overhead utilities including water lines, power networks, and telecom infrastructure.

  • MEP & Systems Interface Support:
