Doha North Highway Expansion

The "Doha North Highway Expansion" is generally considered a key component of Qatar's multi-billion dollar Expressway Programme (also known as the Doha Expressway Programme), managed by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal). This massive infrastructure development was crucial to supporting the Qatar National Vision 2030 and preparing the country for major events like the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Project Description

The Doha North highway works focused on upgrading and constructing major arterial roads, viaducts, tunnels, and interchanges to create a modern, high-capacity road network in the northern and western areas surrounding Doha.

  • Objective: To alleviate chronic traffic congestion within the capital, improve connectivity between major urban centers (like Doha, Lusail City, and Al Khor), industrial areas, and the new Hamad International Airport, and provide better access to surrounding developments.

  • Key Components (North & Orbital Routes): Projects in the north included major parts of the Lusail Expressway and the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route (NOH), which bypasses the city to handle heavy vehicle traffic.

    • Scale: The overall Expressway Programme involved adding approximately 800-900 km of new and upgraded roads, including hundreds of bridges, underpasses, and tunnels. The North components were vital for connecting Doha to the rapidly developing Lusail City.

    • Design and Features: The highways are characterized by multiple lanes (often 8 to 10 lanes for light vehicles plus dedicated truck lanes), complex grade-separated interchanges (multi-level junctions), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and integrated pedestrian/cycle paths.

    • Infrastructure: The scope also included the extensive relocation and installation of underground utility corridors (water, electricity, foul water, and communications).

The project transformed Qatar's road network, significantly enhancing safety, efficiency, and reducing travel times across the country.

Scope of Involvement for JG Building Group

JG Building Group executed critical civil and infrastructure works for the Doha North Highway Expansion, a major transportation upgrade project aimed at improving regional connectivity, traffic capacity, and road safety across northern Doha and surrounding development zones.

Key Scope Areas:

  • Highway Widening & Pavement Works:
    Expansion of existing highway corridors, construction of additional carriageways, pavement strengthening, and high-performance asphalt and concrete surfacing.

  • Interchanges & Structures:
    Construction and modification of grade-separated interchanges, flyovers, underpasses, bridges, and ramp systems to enhance traffic flow.

  • Drainage & Flood Control Systems:
    Development of advanced stormwater drainage networks, box culverts, retention systems, and flood mitigation infrastructure suited to local climatic conditions.

  • Utility Diversion & Coordination:
    Relocation and protection of major utilities including water pipelines, power cables, telecom networks, and gas lines in coordination with local authorities.

  • Road Safety & ITS Infrastructure:
    Installation of crash barriers, lighting foundations, signage, road markings, and intelligent transportation system (ITS) civil works.

  • Traffic Management & Phased Construction:
    Implementation of traffic diversion plans, temporary works, and phased execution to maintain uninterrupted traffic flow during construction.

  • Environmental & Sustainability Controls:
    Dust suppression, waste management, and environmental protection measures in compliance with Qatar’s regulatory standards.

  • Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance:
    Adherence to Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS), international quality benchmarks, and strict safety management protocols.

Project Outcome:

The Doha North Highway Expansion was delivered as a high-capacity, resilient roadway network, significantly reducing congestion, improving safety, and supporting Qatar’s long-term transportation and urban development goals.
